Phonics: Our focus is on the sound the letter makes, not the letter name. Please write your child’s name on the back of every phonics card. Please only focus on sounds covered- do not go ahead with future homework at home.

r: as in rat/ rose/ run/ rabbit/ rainbow etc.
m: as in mouse/ mask/ mommy/ mouth/ magician etc. d: as in dog/ daddy/ dinner/ dice/ digger etc. Revise green phonics: c /k/ ck/ e/ h/ r/ m/ d Revise yellow phonics: s/a/t/i/p/n/ g: as in garden/ garage/ glue/ green etc. o: as in orange/ octopus/ ox/ on etc. N.B. open/ oval/ etc. is a different sound so your child should not draw these pictures. We will learn the long ‘o’ sound at a later date. u: as in umbrella/ under/ underwear/ up/ uncle etc. N.B. unicorn/ university/ uniform etc. is a different sound so your child should not draw these pictures. We will learn the long ‘u’ sound at a later date.

Blending: Your child will learn to read many words by blending the sounds together. By the end of this month, your child should be able to blend and read many cvc words including: red/ had/ hen/ run/ gum/ pet/ car/ cat etc. See school blog for blending videos. Use the phonics cards to make blending words. Don’t worry if your child is finding this difficult at present! Plenty of practise will help build his / her confidence.

Sight/ Tricky / High Frequency Words: These words cannot be blended so your child will learn to recognise and read these words by sight only. Please ensure the sight word cards are stored safely in the words wallet. Please write your child’s name on the back of every word card. Please only focus on words covered- do not go ahead with future homework at home. By the end of this month, your child should be able to instantly recognise the following words. Plenty of practise will help build his / her confidence. : A      a      The      the I    have     Here      here   my      My     is       be      Look       look     We      are       He      he      She    she     has

Handwriting: One letter per week. Please see formation rhyme attached inside front cover. When writing the letter, your child should say the formation rhyme also.  Please ensure correct posture and pencil grip at all times- see inside the back cover.

Reading: Our main focus is that the child uses his/ her index finger to point to each word/ picture. The purpose of this reading is to ensure your child instantly recognises the sight word we are focusing on and is making the link between words and text.
