Cycle Sense: Room 8

9/18/2017

The pupils of Room 8 are currently taking part in cycle safety training course run by 'Cycle Sense'.

The course is aligned to 'Cycle Right', the National Standard for Cycle Training in Ireland, and is delivered by qualified trainers from the national register.

The training will prove invaluable to 5th & 6th Class. For those who already cycle to school, the benefits are obvious, but training is just as important for children who only cycle at home and during the holidays. In fact, everyone who will ever get on a bike needs to learn the safety skills required to assess situations on the road and how to react to them .

Also, by teaching children to cycle safely,l and by encouraging them to cycle in the course of their daily lives, we are putting in place the habit of exercise- at a time when lack of exercise in our youngsters is a growing cause of concern.

The course will consist of 6 (8 hours) sessions with the pupils. Topics covered will include: safe equipment; rules of the road; starting and stopping; road positioning; shoulder checking; turning left and right; overtaking and traffic manoeuvres, and, where appropriate to the group, on-road training.

The emphasis of the course is on safety through control of the bike and awareness of surroundings. It will be very beneficial to trainees to have the opportunity to practice between sessions as this will more quickly develop the core bike handling skills needed for cycling on the road.

At the end of the course, each child will receive a certificate of participation.

Please be vigilant in checking and treating your child's hair for lice. If a child goes untreated, head lice will become a widespread issue throughout the school.

New Wall Mural at Presentation N.S.

Our new wall mural is almost complete thanks to the hard work of Mahwish Rauf throughout the summer months. Mahwish is mother to three of our pupils (Zainab, Fatima and Essa) and her artistic talent has really brightened up our school yard. All our pupils were very excited to help Mahwish put some of the finishing touches to the mural and now the handprints of all our pupils can be seen bordering this impressive paintwork. Here we share just a small selection of photographs. Further photographs will be shared in the coming days.

It's that time of the year again and the Pupil Personal Accident Insurance is up for renewal. This insurance provides cover in respect of the medical and dental expenses resulting from an accident. As insurance costs in general have increased, we have shopped around and the most competitive from both a cost and cover perspective is AIG 24 Hours cover at a cost of €7 per pupil (cash only please)

If a discount will be applied from the Insurer, the balance will be contributed to the Parent Association account and this money will be used for the benefit of both school.

If you wish your child to be covered, please complete the form sent home with your child. All forms and fees should be returned by September 15th.

Kind regards,
Millstreet Parents' Association
