As we are a health promoting school, we will be participating in the 'Food Dudes' programme after Easter.
Food Dudes is a programme developed by the University of Wales, Bangor, to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables both in school and at home. It is based on positive role models (the Food Dudes characters), repeated tasting and rewards. In large-scale studies in schools in England and Wales and pilot studies in schools in Ireland, the Programme has been shown to be effective and results long lasting across the primary age range, regardless of gender, school size, geographic and socio-economic factors.
It is ultimately designed to enable children to enjoy eating healthy diets, and to create a healthy eating culture within schools.
The Food Dudes are four young super-heroes: Charlie, Tom, Raz and Rocco. By eating their favourite fruit or vegetables, the Food Dudes gain special powers which enable them to save the world and the Life Force from a gang of baddies: The Junk Punks. General Junk and his side-kicks, Miss Demeanour and Master Disaster, are trying to drain the energy of the world by depriving it of nutritious fruit and veg. With their special powers, given to them by carrots, tomatoes, raspberries and broccoli, the Food Dudes feed the Life Force and foil the Junk Punks.
There are two main phases to the Programme:
Phase 1 is an intensive intervention which lasts 16 days. During this time, children are given fruit and vegetables while they are read a letter and/or watch a specially designed video of the Food Dudes. These super-heroes save the life force from a gang of baddies whose objective is to take away the energy of the world by depriving it of nutritious fruit and veg. Each day the children are rewarded with small prizes for successfully eating the fruit and veg. This phase is primarily school based, although children keep a diary of fruit and veg they have eaten at home.
Phase 2 extends the home element of the Food Dudes Programme by encouraging the children to bring their own fruit and veg to school everyday in special Food Dudes containers. Classroom wall charts are used to record progress, and children receive Food Dudes certificates and further rewards upon reaching goals. This phase maintains fruit and veg consumption in the longer term.

The school will be closed on February 20th and 21st for the mid-term break.

3rd/ 4th/ 5th and 6th Class pupils are currently undertaking swimming lessons in Mallow Swimming Pool for six weeks.

Every second year, the school is obliged to teach the Stay Safe SPHE Programme to all pupils, with the exception of Junior Infants. The Stay Safe programme itself is a personal safety skills programme designed for use with primary school children from Junior Infants through to 6th class. The programme seeks to enhance children’s self-protective skills by participation in lessons on safe and unsafe situations, bullying, inappropriate touch, secrets, telling and stranger danger.
The programme aims to give children the skills necessary to enable them to recognise and resist abuse/victimisation and teaches them that they should always tell (an adult that can help) about any situation which they find unsafe, upsetting, threatening, dangerous or abusive.
Permission slips have been sent home to all parents. Please state on the note whether you want your child to participate or not. Please return this to the class teacher by February 3rd.
For more information about the contents of the programme which your child will be learning about, please visit the Stay Safe website.

Nut Allergies

There are a small number of children in the school at present who suffer from a severe allergy to nuts. If one of these children should come in contact with nuts, he/ she would have a serious reaction. This is now a serious Health & Safety matter, with potentially fatal consequences for a certain number of students. As we do not wish to put any child in such a dangerous position, we are asking all parents not to give their children nuts or products containing nuts in their lunchboxes, i.e. Nutella, peanut butter, chocolate bars/ biscuits/ cakes containing nuts. Considering this is a health promoting school, most of these products are already discouraged. We would greatly appreciate your support in this matter.
School photographs by Quaid Gallery have been sent home to all pupils. All orders should be returned by October 23rd. Parents are under no obligation to buy these photographs.

Free access to Encyclopaedia Britannica
On January 7th 2013, the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn T.D., announced free home access to the online edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica for all school-going children. For the past three years, primary and post-primary schools have had access to the resource, and today’s roll-out is an expansion of this service. Britannica Online School Edition is a unique and comprehensive resource designed for all levels of learning. It has four age-specific learning areas (“Primary Britannica” for primary schools) which contain various engaging teaching and learning materials, all designed to build confidence and inspire continuous discovery.
Announcing the new development, Minister Quinn said, “I am committed to providing digital content to students that enhances their learning through the use of technology. Our children and young people will now have access to Britannica Online in their own homes and this means that whatever their ability, they can learn at their own pace".

Presentation Day- Wednesday November 21st

Every year on the 21st November we celebrate Presentation Day. This is an opportunity for us to remember Nano Nagle, the founder of the Presentation Order and reflect on the wonderful influence the Presentation Order has had on education in the Millstreet area.
This year, on the eve of Presentation Day, Tuesday November 20th, Presentation Day will be celebrated by the Millstreet community at a special mass in our parish church at 7.30pm.
Since 1840, the Presentation Sisters have educated many generations of Millstreet people both at primary and secondary level. This year marks the end of that era as the remaining Presentation Sisters will be leaving us soon. Therefore, Presenation Day 2012 is a special opportunity for us to show our appreciation of their hard work and dedication throughout the years.
Pupils past and present and all members of the local community are invited to join in this special occasion.
School choir will sing. School choir must wear their full uniform. Any other children attending will remain with their parents.
Anyone who has offered to bake can bring their cakes to the Parish Centre before mass or at 2.45pm Tuesday when collecting your children from school. Thanks for your support for this occassion.

If your child has not yet returned the SchooText.ie form please do so immediately.
Please inform the school if your contact details change during the year as we often send out texts regarding upcoming events, school closures etc.
